How Solar Water Heating Works
![]() |
Solar water heating systems use high efficiency solar collectors to absorb the sun's energy and warm a heat transfer fluid within rhe collector.
The temperature of the fluid within the solar collector is constantly compared, by an electronic controller, with the temperature of the water in a new "twin-coil" solar hot water cylinder (which usually replaces a houes's existing cylinder).
Whenver the collectors are hotter than the cylinder, the controller switches on the system's circulating pump. A mixture of antifreeze and water is then circulated through the collectors and the cylinder's heat exchanger, heating the cylinder in just the same way as a central heating boiler.
