New Solar Panel Planning Rules Launched in Wales5 September 2009
New rules have come into effect in Wales this month allowing homeowners to install a range of domestic microgeneration systems, including solar energy technologies, without needing to apply for planning permisssion.
Under the revised planning laws, owners of houses and flats will be able to install solar water heating and solar PV panels without contacting their local authority first.
In a guide published to explain the new planning rules, the Welsh Assembly Government said that solar panels can appear on any existing roof or walls of your house or flat so long as the top of the panels is no more than 200mm from the plane of the roof.
The leaflet also stipulates that the new permitted development rights do not apply if your home is in a Conservation Area or is a Listed Building. In these cases special provisions apply and you shopuld seek further guidance from your local planning authority.
