Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

Developed to encourage more installations of renewable technology the RHI offers a quarterly payment to those who replace their exisitng fossil fuel heating systems (such as oil, coal & gas) with one of the supported renewable technologies such as solar water heating.

Implemented over two phases; the first was introduced on 28th November 2011 for non-domestic installations only i.e. industrial, commercial, business and public sector buildings who alone contribute 38% of the UK's total carbon emissions alone. Eligibility for these systems will be based on a metering system and will operate for 20 years from commissioning of installation.

Technology Eligible Size Tariff Rate (p/kWh) Tariff Duration Support Calculation

Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP) & Domestic Sector

£300 Solar Thermal voucher available until 31st March 2012 via the RHPP

Phase two of the RHI is due to be implemented in October 2012 alongside the 'Green Deal', however further details are expected to be published shortly. The main principles of the RHI are however expected to cover:

  • 20 year duration (the same as the commercial sector)
  • Householder must agree to monitor and record performance of system (how undertaken to be confirmed)
  • A focus on people living 'Off Gas' where fossil fuels (oil, coal & gas) are more expensive
  • A requirement for a well insulated home; based on the properties Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)

In the interim domestic property owners are still eligible for a Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP), until 31st March 2012; which will act like a grant and support the purchase of chosen renewable technology.

How Do I Apply?

Anyone can apply from 1st August 2011 via the Energy Saving Trust (EST) and will simply need to fill in an application form and submit with a copy of your invoice and MCS certificate following installation, provide by Filsol. You will then receive a direct payment back into your bank account.

*Please Note* This opportunity is for a limited time only and will based on a threshold limit of £50m expenditure or until 31st March 2012. Low Carbon Building Programme (LCBP)

Over the last few years the principal sources of Government grant funding have been delivered through the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP). Regrettably this LCBP grant scheme was closed to all new applications with immediate effect from 24 May 2010. At this time there is no indication the LCBP will re-commence or that a subsequent opportunity will emerge in its place.
